Cables for temperature measurement
Thermocouple, compensating and sensor connecting cables from stock — 111 versions from PVC to glass fibre, from −190 °C to +600 °C, by the metre or ready assembled.
Which cable do you need?
| Extending a thermocouple to the reference junction, highest accuracy | Thermocouple cable (e.g. type KX) | The conductors are made of the same thermocouple material as the element — smallest additional deviation. |
| Running a thermocouple economically over longer distances | Compensating cable (e.g. type KCA) | Thermoelectrically equivalent substitute alloy, equivalent in the range of the reference junction and considerably cheaper. |
| Connecting Pt100 or Pt1000 in 2-, 3- or 4-wire circuit | Connecting cable, 2 to 8 cores | Copper conductors; the number of cores depends on the circuit and the number of measuring elements. |
| Routing next to frequency converters, motors, contactors | Version with copper braid or foil screen | Screen against coupled interference voltages — crucial for the mV signals of thermocouples. |
| Mechanically stressed routing, hot environment | Version with stainless steel braid, glass fibre | Stainless steel braid as armouring, glass fibre up to +400 °C, special version up to +600 °C. |
The three cable types
Thermocouple cablesTypes J, K, L, N and T — conductors made of the thermocouple material itself, for extending the thermocouple to the reference junction. |
Compensating cablesTypes B, J, K, L, N and S — thermoelectrically equivalent substitute alloy, economical over long distances. |
Connecting cables1 to 8 cores for Pt100 and Pt1000 resistance thermometers — from PVC through FEP and PFA to PTFE and glass fibre. |

Insulation materials and application limits
| Material | Temperature | Properties |
|---|---|---|
| PVC | −30 … +105 °C | Inexpensive, easy to route, for control cabinets and indoor use |
| Silicone | −60 … +200 °C | Very flexible, even in the cold, good ageing resistance |
| FEP | −60 … +205 °C | Resistant to chemicals and oil, thin wall |
| PFA | −60 … +260 °C | Like FEP, higher load capacity, suitable for ultra-pure media |
| PTFE | −190 … +260 °C | Down to the cryogenic range, almost inert |
| Glass fibre | up to +400 °C | Furnace construction and high temperature, special version up to +600 °C |
